Subtitles are essential for making videos which are accessible and more engaging to a wide audience. While important for those with hearing impairments and non-native language speakers, subtitles enable a more engaging viewing experience for all.

Our Subtitles are designed to help you apply professional-quality subtitles to your videos in almost any language. Open the subtitle editor from the scene toolbar.

You’ll notice roughly 3 sections in the subtitle editor:

Section 1 - Editing area for the current scene.
You can update text, timestamps and add or remove lines. The options menu also enables you to download or delete the subtitles for just this scene.

Section 2 - Preview area for the current scene subtitles.
You can play/pause the video to preview your edited subtitles in real time.

Section 3 - Languages and Scenes is the main navigation overview.
The selected language sets which subtitles you are viewing as you review your scenes. When working with multiple languages you may swap between languages.

Here’s the quick how-to guide for editing and exporting with subtitles. For anything unexpected, check the FAQs at the bottom of the article.

1) Check your languages are correct

You should see the spoken language of your video currently selected. The ⌨️ icon visible next to each where subtitles should exist in the language.

In the example below, the spoken language is German in scene 1 & 3, whereas scene 2 & 4 are silent, so no subtitles were generated. Looking good!

​2) Review and edit subtitles per scene

Edit a scene subtitles as needed, based on the preview. You can update the subtitle text, timestamps and add or remove lines to achieve the desired result. Continue for each scene until your are satisfied with the spoken language subtitles of each scene.

​3) Export or translate to other languages
Once you’re satisfied with your spoken language subtitles you have a few options to Export or continue with translating into other languages.

After a subtitled video is exported, you can download the video file or just the SRT and VTT files. In addition, this export also makes the subtitle available as a caption language in any of your published videos links.

To translate your subtitles into other languages, click to “+ Add language” from the subtitle editor. These are translated directly from the source language subtitles.

💡Review original subtitles before translating. Any typo in your original spoken language subtitles will transfer to the translations - meaning double work to fix.

Can I add subtitles in more than one language?
Yes, you can add subtitles in multiple languages to cater to a diverse audience. For best translations, ensure all the spoken language subtitles are correct, before translating into other languages

​Why are subtitles missing in some scenes?
When the scene does not detect a person speaking the subtitles will not be generated. You can manually create subtitles or upload an SRT to add subtitles to the scene. One other scenario is that the audio has been updated after the initial upload - eg: deleting an asset and uploading a different asset. In this case, you can delete and re-create the automated subtitle for the scene.

​How accurate is the auto-transcription?
Our auto-transcription is highly accurate, but we recommend reviewing and editing to ensure it matches your content perfectly.

​Is it possible to edit subtitles after exporting the video?
Subtitles should be finalized in the editing space before exporting. However, you can always re-edit and re-export if needed.
